Grant served 1839 to 1854 and again 1861 to 1869.
He was overall commander of the United States Army and also commanded the Division of the Mississippi, the Army of the Tennessee, District of Cairo, District of Southeast Missouri, 21st Illinois Infantry Regiment and the 4th Infantry Regiment.
He died aged 56 in November 1972.
